AI and Human Judgement

Doorway into: assisted inquiry without surrendered responsibility

For readers asking: What may AI contribute—and what must remain human?

AI can help people articulate what they sense, compare perspectives, translate between vocabularies, remember earlier decisions and notice inconsistencies. Used well, it can widen inquiry and make correction easier.

But representational ability is not situated judgement.

AI does not have first-person access to the body, the relationship, the place or the consequences of an action. It cannot originate a legitimate mandate, bear public responsibility or determine what a situation ultimately means.

Co-intelligence is not machine authority.

Human judgement is not infallible either. A bodily sense of unease may reveal that something has been missed—but it is not automatically truth. It reopens inquiry. The response must then be tested against evidence, affected people, local knowledge, institutional obligations and observable consequences.

In municipal and organisational work, AI may receive a graduated mandate: analysing material, drafting proposals, coordinating information or performing limited reversible actions. Delegation must never exceed the institution’s ability to understand, stop and repair what the system does. Responsibility must remain locatable in a named person or legitimate decision-making body.

This is why the architecture distinguishes three things:

• The Correction Loop is the accountability mechanism that keeps interpretation and action open to challenge.

The decisive moment is the Last Impulse: the point at which a possibility becomes situated action. AI may contribute to everything leading up to that moment. It cannot take responsibility for crossing it.
