A 30-second reading

Observation from a body in a place is already knowledge. It does not become knowledge only after an institution collects, aggregates or authorises it. But “full” does not mean final, exhaustive or immune from criticism. Situated knowing is complete as an act of knowing at its own scale, while remaining partial, fallible and open to correction.

Full knowledge is not final knowledge

A farmer noticing a change in soil, a child noticing fewer insects or a person registering that a work rhythm is depleting them is not merely supplying raw material to a more authoritative process above. Something real has been encountered. The observation gains trust through repetition, comparison, humility, other forms of evidence and attention to what follows.

This is narrower than saying every perception is equally valid. Bodies can misread. Communities can be pressured. Fatigue, fear, ideology, trauma and desire can distort attention. Situated knowledge deserves standing, not exemption from correction.

The body is part of the instrument

The observer is not outside the system being observed. Breath, fatigue, pain, ease, memory and repeated presence may disclose conditions that distant accounts miss. This does not make the body infallible. It means the instrument must be cared for and allowed to say when it cannot truthfully continue.

A depleted steward is therefore not noise in an otherwise successful project. Their depletion is knowledge about the conditions through which the work is being carried.

Expertise can meet without becoming sovereign

The argument is not against expertise. Hydrology, ecology, law, remote sensing and other disciplines can reveal mechanisms that local observation cannot see. A local observation may in turn expose abstractions or blind spots in a distant model. Neither position exhausts the reality they meet.

Useful questions may travel between places: What is changing? Who experiences the consequence? How is power distributed? What would count as correction? But a question can travel without its answer, categories or authority travelling with it. A shared grammar belongs to the inquiry. Reality exceeds it.

Data is offered, not extracted

If an observation is already knowledge, it is not automatically owed upward. Sharing should have purpose, provenance, consent and an accountable holder. Some domains can be measured and shared; some are self-witnessed; some should remain unrecorded. Another person’s grief, body, belief or protected knowledge is theirs to offer, never someone else’s to collect.

A small example

A local steward notices that water disappears more quickly after rain. The observation is not yet a hydrological model, but it is a legitimate beginning. The steward may return across seasons, compare photographs, speak with neighbours, invite hydrological expertise and revise the account. Expertise enriches and may correct the observation; it does not retroactively turn a non-knowledge into knowledge for the first time.

What this does not claim

Epistemic standing does not by itself confer land, law, money, enforcement or authority over other people. A published grid cannot authorise anyone to enter, record or govern a place. Nor must every inquiry use Spiralweb’s categories, the number thirteen or any shared tool. A local grammar may be better, and refusal is part of the method.
