Spiralweb is organised around working wagers rather than a finished doctrine. A wager states an orientation clearly enough that experience, evidence or criticism can make it change. The Association is the first bounded field in which these wagers must become answerable: its governance, use of AI, receipt of support, publication practice and treatment of human capacity are part of the inquiry, not administration outside it.
A founding field tests itself first
The founding field is not a territory, pilot site or claim that Spiralweb’s architecture is active everywhere. It is the Association’s own accountable practice in formation. People and places connected with Spiralweb are not experimental subjects. Any situated application requires legitimate local mandate and retains the right to translate, correct, refuse, pause or leave.
This reverses a familiar direction. The architecture does not begin by asking whether other places conform to it. It begins by asking whether the institution carrying it can receive support, publish knowledge and hold relationships without becoming sovereign over them.
Why wagers rather than principles?
The nine wagers are not all hypotheses in the same scientific sense. Some are empirical claims, some design hypotheses, some normative commitments and some interpretive syntheses. Their correction conditions therefore differ. A claim may need to be narrowed, divided, reclassified or abandoned rather than simply verified or falsified.
Three opening wagers concern a newly lowered threshold: situated practice can now become coherent public knowledge infrastructure; situated knowing may contribute to democratic correction without acquiring mandate; and public decisions become real in living fields even though responsibility must remain with named humans and legitimate institutions.
Six further wagers hold the spine: ethics concerns what bodies, relationships and institutions can carry; different readings should remain non-compensatory; situated knowledge is genuine but fallible; support should not buy local control; AI fluency is not understanding and responsibility remains human; and viability must be allowed to veto expansion.
Grounding, rooting and propagation
A food forest offers the paper a deliberately incomplete figure. Grounding prepares ethical, legal and epistemic conditions. Rooting makes a bounded movement answerable to consequence. Propagation lets warranted learning travel without requiring every place to become alike or making the centre heavier.
The sequence is not a maturity ladder. Several movements may coexist, repeat or stop. One application may be enough to disprove a general claim. It is almost never enough to validate a universal one.
What this does not claim
The wagers do not activate a protocol, appoint a steward, create a field relationship or establish that the architecture transfers beyond its present formation. Coherence is not proof of truth or legitimacy. AI can help a small practice produce institutional-looking form; the same capacity can distribute knowledge or manufacture its appearance. Provenance, contestability, rights protection, correction and named human responsibility therefore become more important, not less.

What would this architecture have to notice, change or relinquish in order to remain answerable to the people, places and forms of life it seeks to serve?
